August 12, 1929 - October 12, 2018
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Josephine Stokes (nee Hewitt). She died peacefully on the morning of October 12, 2018 in the Victoria General Hospital. Josie's family and friends will fondly remember her as a quiet person who loved living in the countryside with her horses, cats, and artwork.

Josie was born in Rushden, Northamptonshire, England on August 12,1929. She remained in that region throughout her childhood. She studied and later taught at the Merriswood Agricultural College. While teaching, she met her husband Brian Stokes. Following their

marriage in 1955, Josie and Brian spent 35 years on various farms in Surrey, South Wales, and Cornwall. During that time, Josie pursued her love of horses by becoming a qualified riding instructor and horse trainer. She also pursued her passion for art, studying painting techniques at the Falmouth Art School in Cornwall.

In 1989, Josie and Brian immigrated to Vancouver Island and created the Osborne Bay Resort in Crofton. As always, Josie remained passionate about horses and painting. As such, she volunteered with the Therapeutic Riding Centre at Providence Farm. She also continued to study art, taking courses at the Emily Carr School of Art in Vancouver. Later, Josie completed an Art Degree at Malaspina College by taking courses in Duncan and Nanaimo. In 2008, Josie and Brian retired to a small farm south of Duncan.

Brian predeceased Josie on November 19, 2015. While she sorely missed him, Josie managed the loss by remaining committed to an active life by caring for her horses, doing her art work and visiting with family.

Josie always valued strong family connections. As such, she was a beloved mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children: Lynda (Lee), Tim, and Sarah; her five grandchildren: Jocelyn (Lea), Kierstyn (Ryan), Brent, Jessica (Dallas) and Liam; and two great-grandchildren: Addison and Finnley. Josie will also be remembered and missed by her extended family and friends in England and Canada.

A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends on November 17th 2018.

In lieu of flowers, please provide a contribution to Providence Farm.
