April 19, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of June Cook on April 19 after a short illness at Cowichan District Hospital. She was born in Calgary to Ole F. and Ruth Eggen (nee Beck).
Predeceased by her husband of 63 years Jim Cook. Survived by daughters Brenda and Stacey (Dave). Grandchildren April, Mitchell (Nicole) and Nicholas. Son in law Ron. Predeceased by her brother Gerry (Faye) and sister Ginny (Herb). Her loving brothers and sisters in laws: Royce (Sandy), Lloyd (Janice), Meryl (Dinah), Geraldine, Marylynn (Larry) and many nieces and nephews.
Mom grew up on 3rd Avenue NE in Calgary and vividly remembered the dust storms of the 30's where she said the sky went black in a moment and she'd have to run to get in the house before the storm hit. Tall for women at that time, she was a member of the basketball team in high school. When she married, she moved to Jim's family ranch in southern Alberta.
Mom would reminisce of hand feeding orphan lambs and dances in town. She did the water level reading of the local river for many years. In 1972 Mom and Dad moved to the Cowichan Valley where they lived and raised their daughters in houses they built themselves. Mom bowled 5 pin for years at Duncan Lanes. June was an active child minder with Mother's Morning Out and an active member of the Arthritis Society until the local chapter closed.
Mom enjoyed her word searches and crosswords. She was an incredibly skilled seamstress making almost all her daughters and her own clothes. Her baking and family meals were second to none and enjoyed by all. A lot of her family recipes came from her Grandma Minnie Beck. She had a great group of friends that she got to see frequently at their lunches out. June's smile and gentleness will be missed by everyone that knew her.
A special thanks to Dr. Grymaloski, Zac, Alex & Carole at CDH. No service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
