It is with great sadness that the Hearsey family announce the peaceful passing of our Dad, Papa, Great Papa, on September 27, in Hinton AB at the age of 93.
He is survived by his 5 children, Len Jr. (Yvonne), Tom (Linda), Rick (Joanne), Jane Kocurek (Peter), and Ken and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son David (1978) Doreen, his loving wife of 6 decades (2008), his parents Lloyd and Mary and siblings Chris, Harold, Phyllis (Dossie) and Jacqueline (Jackie).
Len was born in rural Saskatchewan on November 7, 1927 to Lloyd and Mary Hearsey. He spent his first 11 years in Ignace ON before moving to Youbou BC in 1939.
During the War Years he trained with the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers while attending high school. Reaching adulthood after the war he was employed by BCFP where he learned mechanics in various logging camps on the Island and BC Coast.
In the early '50s Len married Doreen, started a family, and soon after went into business with his father and brothers. He was instrumental in building the family trucking business, Hearsey Transport, into a thriving entity that grew to 60 trucks serving Vancouver Island, the BC Mainland, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Len served the community as a Rotarian for many years during this era.
Leaving Hearsey Transport, Len then went on to form a new trucking company with his sons. This was a passion that held his enthusiasm until he finally hung up his coveralls well into his '80s.
Len was an avid fisherman and hunter, passing this interest onto many of his sons and grandchildren. Through his daughter, Jane, he found a latent fondness for horses and he and 'Smoke' formed a bond that was only interrupted by advanced age and his ability to stay in the saddle.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Mountain View Continuing Care in Hinton for their compassionate professional care.
The family would also like to extend our love and special thanks to our sister Jane who took Dad's care to a different level with her devotion to bringing him his breakfast sandwich and coffee every morning and looking after his needs while he resided in assisted living.
A celebration of life will be held at a date to be determined.
