Lewis (Lewie) Gaudet Audy, 100, died Tuesday Sep 25 2018 at Sunridge Place Care Residence in Duncan after a long and eventful life well-lived.

He is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Melita, and he leaves his step-son and step-daughter, Ron Schaeffer and Peggy Hodding, and Ron's wife Johanna. He also leaves his grandchildren Jacob, Andrew, Emily, Jared and Jordon and their spouses, along with his great- grandchildren. He was also close with nieces Carol Knudsen (BC) and Janet Penrose (Australia).

Lewie was born in Drumheller, AB, and spent his early years there. Ever the daring adventurer, he left home young, embarking on a solo train journey west in his teens. In 1940, he joined the Royal Canadian Army and became a member of a truck transport unit in Europe during World War II. After training in England, Lewie entered continental Europe through Italy, moved north through France & Belgium, and ended up in Germany at the end of the war.

Upon return to Canada, he embarked on several eclectic endeavors, including coal mining, wrestling (The Dinosaur of Drumheller), watch repairs, dental technician (making dentures), working in a foundry, shoe- making, and finally, spending years in the forestry industry as a driller/ blaster. After retirement, he enjoyed working on endless creative projects in his workshop, spending time with his grandchildren, entertaining coffee mornings with friends, a brief concrete block-making business, and being a member of his local Kiwanis group. To the surprise of no one who knew him, Lewie often acted as the clown in the Kiwanis parades. To all his friends, he is probably best remembered for his uproarious stories, a great, if mischievous, sense of humour and a genuine zest for life that was awe-inspiring.

A celebration of life has not yet been planned.

In lieu of flowers, Lewie would have appreciated any memorial donations being made to either the Kiwanis Club, or a Veterans support organization (such as the Royal Canadian Legion, Poppy Fund: legion.ca/remembrance/ donate-to-the-poppy-fund).

His family would like to recognize the compassion, care and concern that was shown to Lewie by the staff of Sunridge Place in his final years, the camaraderie and friendship of Duncan Kiwanis members, as well as his excellent treatment by Veterans Affairs Canada.
