December 16, 1932 - August 6, 2021
Madhuri born in Amritsar, Punjab India on December 16th, 1932 passed away peacefully on August 6th, 2021 at the age of 87 from a brief illness. She is survived by sons Rajan (Freeza), Romi (Harjinder), and daughters Vinita (Martin) and Aunjali, 4 grandsons, 4 granddaughters and 2 great grandsons.
Madhuri along with her husband Bhanu and daughter Vinita immigrated to Canada in 1957 and called Duncan their home ever since. Madhuri loved meeting people as she missed her family in India. Along with her husband, she was involved in their community of Duncan through various organizations that included: Independent Order of Foresters and Cowichan Intercultural Society.
Madhuri's expertise in the culinary arts made her a local celebrity and very popular. For over 38 years, she taught Indian Cooking at Malaspina University College and various other locations on Vancouver Island. She also taught English to new Canadians in her earlier career.
Teaching was important to her as she loved to share her talents with other people. Madhuri enjoyed boating and camping with her children and grandchildren. She loved the outdoors and joined a women's hiking group to explore her love of the island.
One of her many accomplishments included publishing a cookbook in 1998 called "Authentic Indian Cooking" from Madhuri's Kitchen which went on to be a best seller for many years. This book was her dream and a legacy for her children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Cowichan District Hospital and Cowichan Hospice for their kindness and compassion during her brief illness.
