In loving memory ~
Marian was born in Sherbrooke, QC and was the second of five children of the late Alexander George Begbie, originally of Bloomsbury, London, England, and the late Mary Albertina Lennon, originally of Waterville, QC. Following high school, a career in nursing was cut short by TB, but not too much time passed before she found love- marrying S/Sgt. Arthur Charles (Pat) Pattenden in 1955. Over the years their family grew to six children and, because Pat was still in the Armed Forces, they moved across the country: from Quebec to New Brunswick, Yukon, Winnipeg and finally Duncan, BC (1965) after Pat retired from the forces.
Like many women of her era, Marian devoted herself to being a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. But she also managed to pursue other interests: honing typing, shorthand and public speaking skills, singing, leading music in church, and learning Spanish so she could converse with a new friend. This last pursuit speaks to her greatest gift and passion: a genuine caring for other people and immense interest in their life stories. And finally, an abiding faith and trust in God guided her footsteps and helped heal life's wounds.
Marian is survived by her sister Roberta Hampson, sons: Fred (Janet), Chad, Shaun; daughter Patricia; 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister Gwendolyn Fontaine; brothers: George and Warren, husband Pat, daughter Christine Douglas, son Eric, daughter-in-law Kathy (Chad) and son-in-law Douglas Berry (Patricia).
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at St. Edward's Catholic Church, 2085 Maple Bay Rd, Duncan, BC. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
