November 20, 1927 – December 29, 2016 Our anchor is gone, we are set adrift. Mike passed away quietly after a wonderful day surrounded by the love of family & friends, which is where he always loved to be. Born to parents who arrived from Ukraine with his two elder brothers the year he was born, he created a life for himself on the west coast but his Saskatchewan homesteading roots never left him. His exacting standards, love of the earth, fierce determination, and practical ingenuity were evident in everything he created. He was a master steel fabricator, stone mason, artist, boat builder, and gardener extraordinaire, among other things. His passing leaves a void that will never be filled. Mike is survived by his partner Dolores MacMillan, daughter Olena & son in- law Scott McCallum, granddaughters Nicole & Vanessa (Geoffrey Kee), great-granddaughter Sophie McCallum, “adopted grandsons” Sean (Lorraine) & Jason (Heidi) Powell, step-daughter Sandra (Rob) Bowes and many special friends, nieces & nephews. Mike was predeceased by his ex-wife Ruth, parents Mike & Olena, and 10 siblings. A memorial service will be held on Ukrainian Christmas Day, Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 1:00 pm at First Memorial Funeral Services, 375 Brae Road, Duncan. Tea to follow. Online condolences may be offered at www.dignitymemorial.ca.
