'From One Rock To Another'
Millie was born in Harbour Breton, Newfoundland. Predeceased by her parents Lawrence & Angela Organ. Survived by her 11 siblings Lloyd Organ, Mary and Gerard Caines, Joan & Frank King, Angela, Barb, Gerard, William, Adonis (Karen), Caroline, Murray & last but not least Stella.
Millie grew up in a very small settlement in the District of Bay d'Espoir on the South Coast of Newfoundland. From what she told me she had a great life. Poor, but with a mother she idolized. She grew into a caring person and was very protective of her family and its name.
I first spotted this little "Newfie Beauty" on the internet, attracted by the beautiful smile and gorgeous teeth. She was sitting on a couch in a white blouse (included here), friends persuading her into posing for the photo to put on the website.
Millie's profile listed her attributes as a "light" smoker, "social" drinker, could swim, and a few other fancies. After a quick trip to the local pool, I could see I had my work cut out for me. Millie quickly signed-up for swim lessons, and after a year of walking in the dark at 6:00 a.m. to the YMCA, she became quite a proficient swimmer. We once swam 6 times across The Quarry non-stop....together at Shawnigan Lake.
Having Irish Genes, Millie was just a "wee" bit stubborn, and when she put her mind to do something, there was no stopping her.
Mildred loved to work out. She bought a heavy bag and gloves, and punched and kicked it. She ran a lot, both with myself and many friends. Bootcamp was one of her favourites. She had her weights and elastic bands for her early morning workouts.
Around 2007, we moved from James Bay to Mill Bay, and purchased a house where we opened and ran Millie's B&B for 5 years. It was very successful and fun, but we were too busy to continue with it. We soon set Millie up with her own hair salon in Shawnigan Lake. She was very proud of her business and had many loyal customers, some still coming to her from Victoria.
Many of the kids wouldn't let anyone else touch their hair - they all loved the little Newfie. Her shop was always spotless and full of charm. She always played nice music and the atmosphere was all smiles.
Being such a popular little "Newfie" meant that I had to "share" her time with many. Most everyone wanted a minute or two with the little "firecracker". My loss is shared with many... and I feel for you all.
Newfoundland has always been deep in Mildred's heart. She always talked about her family and her love for them all. Her father of course played the accordian, fiddle, guitar, and the harmonica. I was lucky enough to make it "back home" with Millie a couple of times for good ole' kitchen parties. Millie would have moved back to Newfoundland in a "New York minute" but I suggested it might be a little too "cool" for retirement.
I can honestly say that I have never seen another person that could bring & spread so much joy to others. She had an absolute magnetic personality. Millie could light up a room. We are all going to miss this wonderful little girl, and her 2-stepping in her cowboy boots.
I would like to thank my family and friends for all their support through this time. I would especially like to thank the medical staff in the ICU's at Vic General and Van General hospitals. A special thank-you to Dr. Louis DeBeers who was not only Millie's GP but a special friend to her. Also a special mention to the nurses in my family, I am forever indebted to you.
