August 15, 1917 – December 14, 2016 Peter was born in London, England to John Thomas Waldin and Katherine Benwell. After sailing to Canada as a young lad of 15 years, Peter wore ‘many hats’, each of which brought him satisfaction and a means of serving others. He was farm hand, seaman, miner, teacher, businessman, Boy Scout Leader, radio broadcaster, boat builder, artist, author, and charter skipper. Peter leaves behind, from his first marriage two children, John and Jein and was predeceased by his wife Katherine and daughter Beverley. Peter’s spiritual growth was fostered as a choir boy in the Church of St. Cross, Winchester. It was during the hard times working as a farm hand in Alberta that Peter’s life was changed. Peter tells of how his prayer of, “Oh Lord, give me Light!” was answered, and received with tears of contrition and then of joy. Peter’s long career included serving as a missionary with his first wife Katherine in rural Alberta, teaching at the Mountainview Bible College. From 1965 to 1975, Peter was associated with Berean Bible College, Calgary, where he established their Speech Department. After moving in the early 1970’s to Mill Bay on Vancouver Island he built Sunrise, a 32’ concrete hulled yellow sailboat that became well known in the area as he chartered her out to families and groups for over 30 years. In 1982, Peter married Dorothy Murray who soon after successfully encourage him to take up water colour painting. Many of his paintings were sold through the Butchart Gardens. After 21 years together, Dorothy succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease. Beginning in 1986 Peter took the first of what would lead to twenty-two mission trips to what became his second home - San Blas, Mexico. In the Spring of 2006, while enjoying an outing in Butchart Gardens, Peter met Hannelore Siebel Kirchner who became his wife in December of that year. They enjoyed many trips to Mexico and sailed local waters on his boat. To Peter’s great sorrow, she succumbed to cancer in October, 2011. Peter expressed on one occasion that if there were an epitaph he would choose, it would be, “He loved God, and Man and all Things greatly.” A memorial service is planned for December 29th at the Saanich Peninsula Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Boy Scouts of Canada would be appreciated.
