In loving memory ~
Early Sunday July 21st, 2024 Raymond Archie McKay peacefully left us. Memories of his adventurous spirit, quick humour and quiet confidence live on in his family and friends.
During his early years in Kenora Ontario Archie met the love of his life and wife of 69 years, Sybil (Evenden). He is dearly missed and remembered with love by wife Sybil, daughter Dana Hagberg (Brian), son Scott McKay (Rebecca), grandchildren Kerrin Hagberg (Ryan Wiersma) and Graeme McKay, as well as extended family and countless dear friends.
Archie started his professional life as a fireman and engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway. When steam turned to diesel engines, he took to law enforcement with the Kenora Police. In 1966 Archie and family made the bold leap from Ontario lake country to Vancouver Island where he joined the Oak Bay Police.
Arch, Syb and their two young children discovered their love of boating as they cruised to the family island in Lake of the Woods. Many years of cruising with the Cowichan Croanies and "2-foot-itis" led them from boating day trips to extended adventures in the San Juan Islands and Desolation Sound. Archie enjoyed being a Capital City Yacht Club member and serving in their work parties.
Archie's love for motorcycles began on a 1949 Indian Chieftain. His travels on two wheels continued through the years, including a 6000km round trip from Victoria to northern Ontario. At age 82 this cross-country quest to Kenora's Vets Confectionary was for coffee with his childhood buddies.
He was a Mr. Fix-It. He fixed anything that needed fixing. Archie kept active from his home overlooking Quamichan Lake in the Cowichan Valley where, at 92, he would walk daily and enjoyed the occasional pint with friends and family.
On Archie's request there will be no service. Personal wishes can be sent to kayden55@telus.net.
