September 9, 1942 - March 11, 2025
In loving memory ~
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Irving Swanson. Born September 9, 1942 at home on the farm in Saskatchewan, his family eventually settled in the Okanagan, where he met and married Sydney, while still attending grade thirteen in 1962.
Shortly after marrying, Robert and Sydney moved to Duncan, chosen for its temperate climate, growing economy and close proximity to Sydney's home town of Youbou. Their family grew to five and Robert changed his career at the Crofton pulp mill for a real estate license in 1967. He held this license for the next 44 years, transitioning from a realtor to a real estate appraiser in the 80's, at which point he opened his own firm - Swanson Appraisals - in 1988. With the help of his daughters, Jolene and Krista, Swanson Appraisals remained open for 23 years, closing its doors when Bob retired in 2011.
After retirement, Bob could be found renovating homes, volunteering for the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle program, serving as a director for the Cowichan Sportplex, joining the Legion and becoming a fixture at all Remembrance Day parades. Bob seemed to know everyone and could be found chatting in stores, bank line ups and on street corners any time he left home.
After a brief illness, Bob passed peacefully on March 11th with his wife and children, Sydney, Jolene, Jamie and Krista by his side. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 63 years, three children, his bonus son Duffy, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Bob informed Sydney that he never wanted a funeral but he wanted a great big party when he left us. His wish is our command. We will hold a party to celebrate the life of a man who was larger than life to those who knew and loved him.
