November 19, 1930 - November 3, 2021
Our precious and beautiful Mom, Ruby, has passed away peacefully. She was the most amazing, strong woman and great friend to so many in the Cowichan Valley. Everyone we've met have the most loving and kind memories of her and she will be missed greatly.
Mom was born in her grandparents' sod house on the Canadian prairies and was so proud and protective of her parents and siblings. As she herself said, yes we were poor but everyone was at that time and I always felt loved and protected.
But Mom also dreamed of seeing the ocean one day (she always likened it to the waving wheat sheaves) and she finally fulfilled that dream when she turned 18 years of age and married.
Mom spent a short time in Vancouver then moved to Victoria.
She completely loved Victoria, being for the first time living in a big city and had her first 5 children there. When we moved to Duncan in 1962, Mom really fell in love. The Cowichan Valley was her idea of heaven and she never wanted to leave it. Her last and 6th child was born here and here Mom would stay.
She began working at the Eaton Company in the 1960's, retiring in 1993. Mom was so worried she would be bored with retirement but soon she became so busy she couldn't fit it all in.
Mom loved gardening, being with her many friends, scenic drives, good food and, most of all, her membership to the Legion, Eagles and Duncan Senior Centre. At the Centre she loved beating all and sundry at shuffle board and carpet bowling and especially loved the camaraderie. She made many wonderful friends that will continue to be ours too.
Mom inspired many, but especially her family, with her strength, her work ethic, her ability to overcome so many obstacles in her life but mostly her love of us. We cannot fully express how much we will miss her and love her.
Mom is predeceased by her parents and siblings excepting one sister, Shirley (George), living in Saskatchewan.
She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Brenda (Bob), Michael (Diane), Valerie, Dawn (Steve), Tim (Marilyn) and Janice, her many grandchildren and great grandchildren including many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cousin, Marguerite, who she loved deeply and always considered a sister.
With many, many thanks to Dr T Rimmer and the staff on the 2nd floor at the Cowichan District Hospital. There are so many to name but they know who they are and how much they loved Mom too. Their kindness and graciousness we will never forget.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Duncan Senior Centre on Government Street on Friday, November 19, 2021 between 2 and 5 pm. Double vaccination certificates must be shown at the door and face masks worn.
