Sukhdev Singh Dhaliwal passed away peacefully on April 20, 2020 at Cairnsmore Place in Duncan, BC. A resident of the Cowichan Valley for over 60 years he will be missed by his family and community.
He was born on March 15, 1933, to parents Amar Singh and Punjab Kaur Dhaliwal in the village of Toosey, Ludhiana District, Punjab, India. Sukhdev "Dave" came to Canada at the age of 15 and started working at sawmills in Mission and Vancouver, BC, before moving to Vancouver Island to work at mills in Youbou and Honeymoon Bay. Dave enjoyed the island and lived in the Cowichan Valley since.
Dave and his late wife, Amarjit Kaur Dhaliwal, raised all 5 of their children in the Cowichan Valley. In 1977, Dave purchased Tansor Service convenience store and gas station where he and his family worked to serve the community until his retirement in 1988.
He is survived by his children Sukhraj (Sookie) Dhaliwal, Sindar (Cindy) Harry, Mindy Smith, Rajinder Dhaliwal, Sukhpaul Dhaliwal, second wife Joginder Kaur Dhaliwal, 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Due to the current restrictions on gatherings because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a small send off with the immediate family on April 23rd.
There will be a service at Duncan Sikh Temple once the restrictions have been lifted.
