Sylvia Hardy (nee Paradis)

April 22, 2020

1948-2020 ~ Hardy, Sylvia passed away peacefully in Victoria, British Columbia on the first day of spring at the age of 71.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Nina (Michael), sisters Judy and Ruth (Ron), brother Leo (Connie), and best friend and constant companion for decades, Jamie. She will also be dearly missed by her nieces, nephews, and wider family and friends, with whom she loved visiting.
Sylvia was born and raised in the Cowichan Valley, and subsequently lived in Vancouver, on Hornby Island, and in the Comox Valley, before returning recently to Cowichan.
Sylvia loved fitness and made that her career, beginning with Cobble Hill Fitness in the 1980s and continuing on in Vancouver, where she also earned her Associates Degree in Kinesiology from Simon Fraser University.
She retired to Hornby Island and later the Comox Valley, and was engaged in both those communities. She was an advocate for people with schizophrenia and was an active member and strong supporter of the Eureka Club of Courtenay, particularly enjoying serving on the board, as a peer counselor, and a puppeteer in the Club's outreach program to local schools.
Sylvia's hobbies included running, gardening and painting, and she excelled at all, sometimes in combination, like when she brought a car full of huge squash from her garden for members of her exercise class to carry as extra weight on a cross country run ... and take home afterward. No give backs! She had already been planning her garden for this year.
With her extensive community participation, her energy, determination, laughter, intelligence and wit, she will certainly be missed.
A celebration of life will be set at a future date.
