December 18, 2017
Died at the age of 92 on Sunday, December 18, 2017 at the Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan following a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 66 years, Winnifred (Pogue) Brewer; his son, Kevan Brewer and his partner, Elizabeth Polluck; his sister, Marian; two grandchildren, John Brewer and Laurie Brewer; and a few close friends.

Walter was born and raised near Edson Alberta, the son of Robert and Anna Brewer, he was one of nine children. Though he spent most of his life as a resident of Duncan he had many fond memories of growing up under the prairie sky.

In his early years, Walter worked on the family farm. After leaving home he worked on the railway firing steam locomotives until he was old enough to join the army. He served 2 years domestically near the end of World War II and then worked on the oil rigs for a time. Walter got his pilot's license and enjoyed flying for pleasure. He met his wife, Winnifred Pogue and they were married in 1950. Walter worked at Stan Reynolds Auto Dealership in Wetaskiwin.

He eventually moved to Edmonton where he worked at Healy Motors. During his time in the army he spent some time stationed on Vancouver Island and in 1964, he got a job at Duncan Garage in Duncan and moved his family from Alberta to the Island. He took pride in his work and made many friends during his time in the automotive business. Over the years, his hard work and expertise led to him becoming the manager of the parts department at Duncan Garage.

Walter enjoyed the outdoors, fishing in his younger years and camping and hiking later. He loved the west coast of Vancouver Island and would holiday there yearly.

When his wife grew ill from Alzheimer's disease he spent 12 years devoting himself to her care.

A graveside service will be held December 29 at Mountain View Cemetery, with private burial.
