August 10, 1931 - April 8, 2020
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Winnie at Dover House on Wednesday April 8.
The fourth of ten children, Winnie was born August 10, 1931 to Harold & Mary Jesse (May) Heal in Maryfield Saskatchewan. Winnie graduated from nursing in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, September 4, 1952, and married John Henry (Jack) Stubbington February 7, 1953 at Winnie's childhood farm in Maryfield. They started their family in Flin Flon Manitoba with two sons, then moved to Saltair BC, where two daughters followed. During her thirty five year nursing career at Chemainus General Hospital, Winnie graciously endeared herself to both her colleagues as well as to the generations of people she nursed. She retired from nursing at the age of 60, moving on to another chapter of life filled with projects & adventure with Jack and their expanding family.
Until recently Winnie remained in her Ladysmith home on the hill she and Jack built together, where their doors were quite literally open wide to all. She was predeceased by her husband Jack of 62 years, in 2015, and is survived by her four children Raymond Stubbington (Linda), Donald Stubbington (Gayle), Darcy Wetter (Randy), Nessie Magee (Duncan), sixteen collective grandchildren, her sister Alice Mckinnon, her brothers Cecil, Hugh, & Stan Heal, and many relatives & friends.
Mom loved so many things in life: road trips, burgers & chips, curling, the Roughriders, classic old movies, sitting in the sun & all things family. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humour, strength, & lessons which span from bread making to bed making, from fishing to canning. We will dearly miss the unconditional love and generosity that our Grams shared, and we take comfort in knowing that she is back in the arms of her true love.
Special thanks to Dover House for the devoted care mom received in recent months. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
