AAP for new police building should be ‘no’

Well big Al missed the bus again in his and council’s rush to money.

The mayor says that the new building will be a hub detachment, housing North Cowichan/Duncan detachment, Forensic Identification Services, South Island Traffic Services, First Nations Policing, and services for Shawnigan Lake RCMP.

My isn’t this North Cowichan council a generous lot — their proposal is North Cowichan taxpayers pay for it all.

The article did not explain that this council spent an additional $5 million to buy more land for this upgraded bigger building but only expresses the proposed cost. We all know by past experience that at the end of the day this project will be $60 million or more.

Now the meat of this thing — why not show complete costs to date, just to get the land and explain why no consultation with taxpayers for the extra land costs to facilitate the larger building and the total cost of this project — is $48 million total cost? Is there a guarantee we won’t see any more at the end of the day?

Why as taxpayers do we see other communities’ services here in this project without one mention of them paying one cent? A generous move by council to burden North Cowichan only with this 40 per cent the government and RCMP do not pay.

What does the City of Duncan pay? Free!

What does Government Forensic pay? Free (More than North Cowichan RCMP use this service.)

What does First Nations Policing Pay? Free

What does Shawnigan RCMP pay? Free

What does South Island Traffic Services pay? Free

If this is a multi purpose building used by multiple forces and services why are North Cowichan resident taxpayers asked to foot the bill by ourselves?

Oh my! We elected this council!

We must get out and vote no to this AAP until someone gives the complete picture and explanation of this has already go tthe appearance of a done deal.
