Angels walk among us

Sometimes bad things happen to us, no matter what. Other times they start badly, but miraculously turn for the better. A near accident averted, an illness cured, a stranger steps in and helps. It is the latter occurrences that are such an unexpected joy.

We experienced such an event last Wednesday evening at Chemainus Lake. Our dog Charlie wandered into the marshes, panicked and froze in place, in chest-deep water, about 15 feet out from the dock. Night darkness rapidly approaching, temperatures dropping to near freezing.

911 call, forwarded to animal rescue. Arrival of two dog walkers (not related to the 911 call) walking a Leonberger (in training to be a service dog). Jess (was that her name?) from Duncan takes charge (I keep offering to wade in the water but she says that if anyone has to go in, it will be her).

After 30 minutes of effort, including the Leonberger repeatedly wading out to try to help our dog, Jess manages to convince Charlie to drape his front paws over the life preserver and slowly coaxes him in to safety. We call off the 911. We rush off to warm up and dry Charlie.

What would we have done without Jess, arriving as if on cue, to help us?

As I said, angels walk among us. Jess, get in touch with us if you can.

Peter Ordynec
