Childcare deserves more respect

As a mother of three sons and an early childhood educator, I encourage parents and legislators in our communities to support this plan.

Re: $10 a day childcare

As a mother of three sons and an early childhood educator, I encourage parents and legislators in our communities to support this plan.

It made sense 40 years ago when I entered the field of early childhood education but here we are, still waiting.

Nurses and teachers suffered the same fate way back when and they are now in a very different place, with respect and admiration for their work. Early education is not less valuable than either of those honourable professions and children matter in the early years as much as they do in primary, intermediate and secondary school.

This plan is designed to give families and care providers a chance to finally improve their standard of living (it's a little known fact that most child care staff qualifies for subsidized child care themselves because of their lower wages). This plan supports business and the province as a whole, putting more people to work and reducing the need for social assistance.

But ultimately the children will be the winners because their parents will be able to provide for them in a way that will reduces stress, and more quality care providers will be retained in the field instead of leaving for better wages elsewhere.

All I ask is that you consider the facts and visit the $10aday.ca website for more information. On Election Day vote with your heart and your mind.
