Expansion of Duncan Manor a good thing

Duncan Manor was built in the 1970s when the NDP government of the day acknowledged the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” For decades after, the most vulnerable in our community were neglected as increasing numbers became homeless and others experienced deteriorating housing. The design and replacement of Duncan Manor is the opportunity to show how we treat the vulnerable in our communities.

The Duncan Manor development will involve some temporary adjustments. Retaining the location will reduce those adjustments. It will decrease homelessness, upgrade housing to current health and safety standards, and minimize disruption in the lives of our community members who are already vulnerable. The lives of vulnerable people, and so the life of our community, will be enhanced.

Until we achieve an ideal society without vulnerable members, we have a responsibility to show the true measure of our society by supporting them and the organizations that support them.
