Can we support change to electric vehicles?
Is there a national strategy regarding the electrification of vehicles in Canada? If there is I can’t find any proof of its existence.
The federal and provincial governments are giving incentives to purchasers of new electric vehicles, using our tax dollars without our consent, to support a plan that doesn’t seem to exist. It’s like the Wild West when it comes to electric vehicle marketing and sales.
Where are the numbers that ensure that the batteries of electric vehicles can be recycled effectively? Also where are the numbers to confirm that the electrical grid at all levels can support the charging of residential and commercial vehicles across the country? Where are the numbers to ensure Canada is going to be able to generate enough “green” electrical power to meet the requirements of millions of electric vehicles instead of defaulting to coal burning generation? How many more “Site C Dams” will be required? Will precipitation amounts be affected by global warming resulting in reduced river flows and thus reduced effectiveness of existing and future hydro electric installations?
In 2021 B.C. experienced global climate change extremes that exceeded our imagination and caused billions of dollars damage, and there may be more to come, so there is no reason our future river flows and conversely our hydro electric capacity will not be affected. Other renewable energy sources are a very investment intensive, creating millions of tons of end of life non recyclable materials. If a Canadian vehicle electrification plan is reflected in the current government thinking I would find it hard to buy in.
