The Clements Centre Society, located in Duncan, B.C., is dedicated to supporting children with developmental needs and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our mission is to provide the resources and assistance necessary for people to lead full and meaningful lives within their communities.
As advocates for those we serve, we are keenly interested in the perspectives of MLA candidates on several key issues that affect our community and we would like to take this opportunity to let you know these issues.
Income Security and Housing for Adults with Disabilities
Did you know: Many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in B.C. live in poverty, receiving inadequate financial support through provincial Person with Disability (PWD) benefits. The current benefit of $1,483.50 per month falls well below the poverty line. A livable income in B.C. is estimated at $2,400 per month.
Early Intervention Therapy Wait Times
Did you know: Children in need of early intervention therapies face significant delays, with average wait times exceeding six months. The Early Intervention Therapies programs are underfunded and need expansion.
Mental Health Services for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Did you know: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities face higher rates of mental health challenges but struggle to access specialized care. There is a lack of mental health services tailored to their needs.
Health Care for Children
Did you know: Children with disabilities face barriers to accessing quality health care. Little progress has been made to ensure accessible health services for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in B.C. A comprehensive pediatric health strategy is needed to ensure timely, coordinated care and specialized support.
Poverty and Child Care
Did you know: Families caring for children with disabilities face heightened poverty risks, especially due to a lack of inclusive childcare options. Long waitlists and limited support prevent parents from working.
