Harvest those bullfrogs
Dear North Cowichan mayor and councillors:
We fully applaud all measures to rid North Cowichan of invasive species, including ravenous, multiplying American bullfrogs.
Details are seen in the Sept. 14, 2023 Citizen story.
We support letting resident Michael Indge and others — on case-by-case approval — to harvest these pernicious pests damaging our precious native ecology.
Our prescient municipal environmental bylaws note invasives must be controlled, and eradicated when possible.
These bullfrogs are tragically twinned by many other flora-and-fauna invasives in North Cowichan’s Somenos Lake and elsewhere in our valley.
Action against them should have happened long ago. It must now be swift, effective and ongoing.
Staff must also seek any invasive removal grants available.
We urge North Cowichan council, plus all boards and councils across Cowichan, to coordinate eradication efforts — perhaps employing species-specific, trained invasive-species ‘death squads’ to stop further environmental damage and resident injury.
Yours in ecology,
Peter W. Rusland
