Industry has long known climate change real

I am a retired Canadian Forest Service research scientist very concerned about our greenhouse gas emissions.

The oil industry has been aware of the looming climate change crisis for more than 50 years. I remember bringing the words of a CFS meteorologist up with a Swedish professor. The meteorologist had said the increase in atmospheric CO2 levels measured over the last years meant “the physics of the thing would inevitably result in warming, glacial melt, drought, wildfires, and storm intensification”. (Unfortunately the Swedish prof’s reaction was a lecture on statistics.) This was in 1980; we’ve known far too long.

The oil and gas industry has been aware and done nothing, continuing down the same destructive path, using our tax money to do so. This cannot go on!

We must change to clean, renewable electrical energy, via investment in research and infrastructure. This will result in well paid jobs in a stable and secure energy market.

A cap on oil and gas emissions would be a crucial test of government intentions and Trudeau’s legacy.
