Letter: Is BC Hydro incompetent?

Same issues year after year
letters

After 20 years of living in Glenora  we are very tired of losing power every time there is any kind of fall or winter storm. Last time I checked we have millions of trees in BC so why are the ones that are close to the power lines so important? It is so simple, if the tree is tall enough to fall on the lines then CUT IT DOWN! We are quite good at that in BC so lets get it done.

In all the time we have been here I have never seen a hydro crew or subcontractor actually trimming trees in our area. If every year the same areas lose power then it would seem reasonable to trim the trees in the summer and be pro-active. Instead of endless advertisements encouraging the public to invest in heat pumps how about spending some money on tree trimming?

Why is our government allowing this to continue year after year. One also has to ask why these power lines were built within a few inches of tall trees? I just about choked when I saw the Hydro representative telling all customers on Vancouver Island how to be ready for power outages during a bomb cyclone.  Lets turn that around and tell Hydro to be ready! No one would expect the job to be done in one year but some progress would go a long way for those affected regularly.

I am well aware that there will be plenty of people who will complain about the trimming however they will get over it and they will appreciate it during storm season when the power stays on in their area. Lots of people complained about the smart meters and now no one cares. So how about it Hydro, do your job maintaining the lines and we will continue to happily pay our bill.

I predict that this sensible approach to maintaining our power grid will not happen and I will be writing this letter every year until I die.
