Make it illegal to disrespect flag
Dear Cowichan MP Alistair MacGregor, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:
We urge you and our federal government to introduce a bill — in pride and protection of our country — making illegal to disrespect our flag in any way.
The only exception, as now exists, would be when using our flag as a signal for help during an emergency.
We were shocked and saddened during an internet search that such disrespect as burning, defacing, spitting on, or upside-down flying of our flag for social, personal or political protests, is indeed legal.
There are many other means to legally express cogent concerns about our great country than trashing our sacred flag (engineered by Duncan homeboy Sir Conrad Swan).
This must change — through federal fines — in respect for all brave, selfless, unique, exemplary Canadians of the ilk that receive our knighthood called the Order Of Canada.
In fact, shouldn’t all Canadian flags be made in Canada?
We anticipate your actions forthwith regarding this injustice.
We also expect our local and provincial governments to support this long-overdue federal initiative.
Yours as a proud Canadian,
Peter W. Rusland
