Much ignorance about governments

Thank you Paul Harris for an excellent explanation of what it means to live in a great country, a democracy, instead of an anarchy.

I don’t know how civic responsibility, the layers of government — municipal, provincial or federal — are taught in schools today, but we have seen in the past few weeks that there is a frightening amount of ignorance — at least among the protesters.

This is nothing new. I have worked in many elections, at all levels, and have been astounded to find prospective voters who did not know if the election was provincial, or federal or who were the candidates. Some bragged that they have never voted.

It is easy to blame ‘the government’. I have done that often. They are, though, the people we elected and the last couple of years they have had to make difficult decisions. They are dammed if they do and dammed if the don’t.
