Must look at alternatives to Gateway Project

To all CVRD directors,

Thank you for allowing me to speak at the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday regarding the Kinsol Trestle Gateway Project.

Although I understand the rationale that, perhaps, led many of you to vote in favour of continuing with the next phase of this project, i.e. (a) the wish to move forward since the grant money has a deadline and (b) the thought that step two will involve an environmental assessment, which would seem to be beneficial since it provides more information before a final decision is made.

However, I have trouble understanding why more money would be spent on this project when one sees the obvious effect building the road access along that very narrow panhandle, so close to a fish-bearing stream [would have]. As one director pointed out, the environmental assessment, although providing more information, may also lead to avenues for mitigating environmental damage. There is no doubt, regardless of any mitigation, that environmental damage will occur.

Why spend the money on this? Cannot the money be spent on working toward finding another space for parking, or another solution to the parking problem?

I trust that incorporation of seeking alternatives will be part of the next step.

We must be more far-sighted. Please have a look at this site for an idea of what could be: https://www.nationalhealingforests.com/what-is-the-healing-forest-initiati
