Permit for Ypres development and appalling

Re: development permit for 365 Ypres St.

I am appalled that Westurban Developments has received a permit to build on this lot.

And, as is mentioned in the newspaper, the public was not kept apprised of the new application, nor was there any prior notification to the public.

Obviously, this permit was approved in secret, an outrage.

I am pleased that you two [councillors Garry Bruce and Mike McKinlay] opposed the permit.

I, and very many others, are shocked and appalled that the trees, most of them viable, are to simply to be knocked down. The $500 per tree is no remedy and is a sop.

What needs to happen is that the arborist’s report needs to be taken seriously. Only a few of the trees are rotted. Duncan claims to be a city that protects trees. Shame on Duncan!

What I suggest to prevent a huge public outcry for Westurban Developments wantonly disregarding the preservation of the trees is this: move the trees to other parts of our city, at the developer’s expense.

Five hundred dollars per tree to be used to buy more trees elsewhere, saplings, cannot replace the positive environmental contribution of mature trees. They need to be moved before any building begins.
