Shawnigan Rail Trail lacks community support

Re: “New parkland in Shawnigan creating connections”, (Citizen, June 24)

The Area B director wants to extend the Shawnigan Village Rail Trail (SVRT) to Old Mill Park.

There is an apparent lack of community support for the SVRT project with 779 signatures and counting in opposition from an online petition entitled Petition to Oppose the Shawnigan Village Rail Trail - Keep our Trails Safe and Natural.

The Shawnigan Basin Society recently presented their 130-page report and powerpoint presentation to the CVRD Electoral Area Services Committee on June 2, 2021, to advise of environmental harms and DFO penalties the CVRD would be liable and still our Area B director does not listen to constituents or the environmentalists and wants to plow through the riparian anyway.

Reminds me of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Big Yellow Taxi’, “They paved paradise put up a parking lot…”.
