South Cowichan should remain in Cowichan riding

I strongly object to adding the Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, and Cobble Hill areas to a proposed, provincially reconfigured Juan de Fuca-Malahat riding.

Problem is these areas affected are part of our Cowichan Valley Regional District, not part of the geography south of the Malahat.

Cowichan residents basically have different political issues than folks living in Langford.

Creating this new riding could only serve to muddy political waters for local voters.

Hence, I recommend keeping our current riding boundaries.

Of course, if we suffer the same dismal voter turnout — about 30 per cent — in Cowichan as seen in our recent municipal elections, it won’t really matter where the new boundaries fall.

Voter apathy at any government level is sadly the problem, not riding boundary lines.

Yours in democracy,

Peter W. Rusland
