Letter: Stop Bill 36

Bill 36 replaces the Health Professions Act

Stop Bill 36

Premier Eby has started his unelected term of office with secrecy, tabling Bill 36-2022 with no press releases that I could find, but with great opposition from all walks of health care practitioners.

Where are the citizens of B.C. in this? Silent. There has been no information put out about how this Act will impact our healthcare in B.C. and no investigative journalism by the media.

Bill 36 replaces the Health Professions Act which enabled each discipline within health care to regulate its own area. Each discipline is governed by its peers with great knowledge in that particular medical area.

Contrarily, Bill 36 will be run by one panel of political appointees that will oversee and regulate all areas of any person working in health care, beit doctors, nurses, acupuncturists, naturopaths, chiropractors and other disciplines within the healthcare professionals of B.C.

Do you want your healthcare professional to be someone who is policed by a non medical political appointee?

There has been no consultation with the public, no notification to the public and no deliberation with the varying disciplines.

This bill passed in secrecy is the greatest assault on B.C.’s medical system in the history of B.C. and likely will cause many health professionals to leave the province and this at a time that BC’s healthcare system is already stretched to the breaking point.

It begs the question, does the public want non medical personnel who have been vetted in the time-honored political way of giving favours to their toadies as our medical authority?

Bill 36 is an assault on our rights as patients as no longer will our health care professionals have the patients health as their guiding light. Our health and what happens to us under the health care of BC will now be dictated by a non medical panel of appointed political personnel who will do whatever the government tells them to do.

Looking at history, you can see that this will end badly. Our B.C. government has decided that their way is the only way and that their rationale is the only correct one. Any time a government becomes entrenched in this type of thinking, the people suffer.

You are now going to have decisions made, not by knowledgeable professionals, but by appointed political puppets.

Governments do not always rule wisely or fairly. Bill 36 is a perfect example of severe overreach of our provincial government and it needs to be stopped now.
