Were people really enthusiastic about being pulled over?

Now I’m no hockey stick flagpole libertarian, but your article on the police check at the end of September caught my eye, especially the quote by RCMP spokesperson Bérubé, “Officers received positive feedback from the general public during this enforcement operation”.

By my interpretation of the numbers quoted, the interrupted routines of well over 1,000 folks resulted in approximately 50 charges or potential charges. The trophy photo was the icing on the cake — a bit of theatre I’m thinking.

So was it those well over 1,000 folks who were so enthusiastic about the disruption to their day, or is that comment just a PR thingy?

This seems a blunt tool to offer an Island population randomly beset by Malahat closures, power outages, and cancelled sailings.

Ask the Old Salts in Cow Bay whether a catch rate of 0.05 per cent would be a good day’s netting.
