NATO should invite both Russia and Ukraine to join

As I listened to the radio news talking about the Russia-Ukraine embroilment, an idea occurred to me: NATO should invite both Russia and Ukraine to join.

NATO’s leaders would, of course, immediately turn thumbs down on the idea. “What?” they would shout. “If that ever happened, our economies would be ruined! No arms would be made or sold.”

To that, I would say, “Wonderful. Now we are free to unite Earth as it has never been united before.”

ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) would also be invited to join, as would all the Central and South American countries, all the African nations, China and Japan. The entire world, in fact.

What would this gain? World peace, of course.

Would it actually ruin the world’s economies? No. It would replace the war economies with economies designed for world peace. No more bombers or fighters. No more tanks or artillery, armies, soldiers trained to kill, no more navies, submarines or atomic bombs. The world’s economies would be peaceful, freed of the horrendous expense of weaponry. That would be replaced with the emphasis on the provision of food and health care for humanity, the preservation of Nature and the environment, and the exploration of space, planetary and interstellar.

Since all these military alliances have a basic principal—an aggressive attack upon one country is an attack on all the members—no country would have a reason or even the ability to aggress against another.

Crazy, isn’t it? But all these countries are already members of a global organization, the United Nations.
