New Duncan Manor needs to go somewhere else

I’m not a person to anger easily, but when I read that the proposed new Duncan Manor was going to use/alter a part of Centennial Park I saw RED!

I thought no way, not on my watch, is one inch of our park going to be used for any other purpose! Over my dead body! I immediately wrote a letter to the editor. Later I took a good look at the proposed plans for the facility, showing the layout of the individual rooms, these tiny little spaces to be stacked six storeys high and squeezed onto a tiny property! I read that the new building was being requested by the Duncan Housing Society in “response to urgent housing requests from social workers, the homeless, those in hospital, and for people with special needs”!

Then I took a good look at the included proposed plans for the facility showing the layout of the individual rooms — these tiny little spaces to be stacked six storeys high and squeezed onto a small property and thought, OMG can’t we do better than this? We can do better and we must!

When you look at a map of the area, there is a lot of unused space — surely there is an appropriate one for this facility.

There are a lot of very fine people in the Cowichan area, the best I’ve ever known. Good people of Cowichan, I would urge you to get out your cheque books, empty out your piggy banks, so these people in need can have a proper facility with decent sized living spaces (and not stacked six storeys high) — a place with lovely grounds and gardens around it for residents and their visitors. Corporations, businesses, your help is desperately needed here! Let’s provide a facility that we can be proud of!
