Please stop selling plastic bags for 5 cent fee at the till

To CEO, Walmart and CEO, Superstore:

Re: Plastic bags

As the courteous act of providing a bag for customers to carry their purchases out of your stores, free of cost, has seemingly gone by the way and you are now providing the same plastic bags for a fee of five cents, I’d like to point out that this is not meeting the goal of maintaining a healthy environment.

While I understand that this policy is meant to cut down the number of bags ending up in our landfills, and basically choking our environment, I also believe the practice of continuing to provide them for a fee of five cents has become an unexpected windfall or rather, a cash-grab, that is proving to be quite lucrative. This, I think, is a practice born of greed. Nothing more.

If you are concerned about environmental responsibility and really want to do your part as we all must, it would seem that the best practice you could adopt would be to remove them from your stores altogether. You could replace them with paper bags, much like Thrifty’s Foods does or, as an alternative, cardboard boxes, such as the ones Costco offers, at no cost to the customer. However, if you really do not wish to continue what used to be a courteous provision, then my suggestion would be to let your customers provide their own bags.

Ridding our environment of these toxic substances can only be accomplished if we all do our part and in this case I think it needs to start at the top — with the retailers who continue to supply them.

I strongly urge you to reconsider this practice of providing a plastic bag for a fee and remove them from your stores.

Duncan
