Valuing money ahead of quality care

Public funds already flowing into private seniors care

Donna Harcos has suggested that seniors care homes should be brought into the publicly funded health care system. In response, Joe Sawchuk (“Seniors care homes should remain private”, Sept. 3)) has warned that this would be too costly. But no matter which system we have, it will not be free. Public funds are already flowing into the private system. When my parents needed care I was thankful that their pensions were supplemented by the taxes that we all pay.

Is Mr. Sawchuk satisfied with the care that seniors are receiving in the private system? He doesn’t say. He seems to be so focused on the cost that he can’t think about the quality of the care. Perhaps without intending to, he has confirmed the point that Ms. Harcos made about valuing money ahead of quality care.
