The addition of a reflective vertical strip to the school zone signs is much appreciated. (Submitted)

Thank you for better school zone signs

Good afternoon mayor and council:

I am a resident of North Cowichan, however I wanted to express my appreciation to the City of Duncan and you specifically for an outstanding initiative by one of your staff members.

Adherence to school zone speed limits has continually been a challenge. I frequently drive into town from Lakes Road using Trunk Road and noticed that the school zone signs have had a new “school zone” warning added to the sign. A vertical strip of very reflective/fluorescent wording that is hard to miss, especially in the extended night darkness, throughout winter. The two signs establish the school zone around Beech Avenue for Duncan Christian School.

I can say with confidence that I have noticed an appreciable new adherence to the school zone speed. Well done!

I talked to staff and found out that this initiative was solely the responsibility of your director of Public Works.

A big shoutout, congratulations and thank you to Brian Murphy. I understand all the school zone signs for Duncan have had this improvement implemented.

I can only hope that over the next few months that Public Works staff at North Cowichan and the senior management at School District 79 take notice and initiate a similar program.
