Time to end fossil fuel subsidies
Fossil fuel subsidies pad private profits at the cost of public health. Research has shown climate change to be the greatest global health risk this century. It affects everyone, everywhere, by increasing the frequency, severity and duration of extreme weather events (EWEs) like droughts, floods, heat waves and hurricanes. In the wake of EWEs, transmissions of vector-borne and infectious disease are significantly increased.
In addition, a conservative estimate predicts global sea level rise and desertification to cause the forced migration of 330 million people, multiplying resource scarcity, ethnic tensions, and violent conflict. Famine and water scarcity will become the norm for millions of people.
With so much at risk, taking action on climate change is the most urgent issue of our times. Ending fossil fuel subsidies is the first step in governments’ acknowledging the urgent need to transition to sustainable energy. We have the technology. We have the research. Now we need action.
End fossil fuel subsidies today.
