The host school’s win of the Jim Henninger Trophy as U17 eight champions was one of the highlights of the 50th Brentwood Regatta in Mill Bay last weekend.

Brentwood College School won three races over the course of the three-day Regatta, taking the top spots in the U17 men’s eight and four, and U19 men’s novice eight. Brentwood also claimed silver in the U17 men’s lightweight four, and bronze in the U19 men’s novice quad, U17 women’s eight and four, and U17 men’s lightweight eight and four.

This year marked the return of the Brentwood Regatta for the first time since 2019, after the 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 120 races were held over the three days of this year’s Regatta, featuring 19 school and club teams from B.C., Washington, Oregon, California and Ontario.

“Although we were not at the numbers we were three years ago, the atmosphere and energy of the event were fantastic,” Brentwood rowing coach Brian Carr commented.

Fellow rowing coach and Regatta chair Spencer Manton expressed her gratitude for the community’s support of the event.

“We’d like to send a massive thank you to local businesses in the Mill Bay community for supporting our 50th Regatta, and also to the local Search and Rescue volunteers (RCM-SAR34), who were there for us once again,” she said.

Carr also acknowledged the assistance of the Mill Bay Marina and all the boaters in the area.

“Their support for these crews racing in the middle of their bay was outstanding,” he said.

In addition to the host school, two other local teams competed at the 50th Brentwood Regatta: Shawnigan Lake School and the Maple Bay Rowing Club.

Shawnigan crews placed second in the U19 men’s lightweight single and U19 women’s lightweight four, and third in the U19 men’s single and U19 men’s lightweight four. Maple Bay crews took silver in the U17 women’s coxed quad, double and four.

Shawnigan’s own regatta is scheduled for May 13-15.
