The bantam Cowichan Bulldogs kicked off the fall football season with a 42-12 win over the Victoria Spartans at Westhills Stadium last Sunday.

The Spartans opened the scoring, but the young Cowichan team was able to overcome the early deficit.

New quarterback Jesse Kwasny “showed poise and strong decision-making,” said head coach PJ Shea, and completed big passes to Gregor Mackenzie and Gavin Kendrick, while the offence also got strong runs from running backs Finn Shea and Laine Hogstead.

The Bulldogs’ defence once again showed an ability to adapt and find new ways to stifle their opponents, controlling the game with four interceptions and numerous sacks. Mackenzie and Jayden Strzok had standout performances at the defensive end positions, as did Finn Shea at linebacker.

“This version of the Bulldogs is made up, primarily, of athletes who have played together for a number of years,” coach Shea said. “We’ve got some great new additions, who have bought into the message of hard work and commitment to each other. We are very lucky, every member of this team is an athlete who contributes. We’ll continue to work. I think the ceiling is very high for this group.”

The bantam Bulldogs will host Westside at McAdam Park in their home opener this Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Also in action at McAdam on Sunday are the peewee and junior bantam ’Dogs at 10 a.m. and noon, respectively.
