Breakers off to a great start

Cowichan club posts seven PQTs at home meet

The Cowichan Breakers had an excellent showing as they started the 2017 summer swimming season by hosting the Icebreaker Invitational at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre.

Breakers swimmers combined to post seven provincial qualifying times, 14 meet records and 103 personal best times. Seventeen Breakers had personal bests in all their events.

Sarah Hagen and Natalia Garriock each accounted for three provincial qualifying times. Hagen finished first in six races, the Div. 1 girls 100m individual medley, 50m and 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, and 50m breaststroke, while qualifying for provincials in the 100m IM, 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke. Garriock also placed first in three events, the Div. 8 girls 200m IM, fly and free, with provincial qualifying times in all three.

The other PQT was posted by Reid Urquhart in the Div. 7 boys 100m backstroke, as he finished second in three races, including the 50m fly and 100m free.

Elle Nakonechny placed first in the ‘O’ Cat 1 girls 50m backstroke and 100m free, and second in the 50m free and 50m fly.

Wyatt Rorick finished second in five events, the Div. 5 boys 200m IM, 50m free, 50m and 100m fly and 100m backstroke, as well as third in the 100m breaststroke.

Aniela Hagen was second in the Div. 3 girls 50m breaststroke and 100m free, and third in the 50m free and 50m fly. In the same division, Kaitlyn Atleo was third in the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke.

Tyler LeBlanc posted third-place results in the Div. 7 boys 50m and 100m free, 100m fly and 100m backstroke. Also in Div. 7, James Urquhart was second in the 200 IM and third in the 50m fly.

Maya Doman was second in the Div. 4 girls 100m free, followed by Taylor Buttle in third.

Lucy Heugh placed third in the Div. 2 girls 100m IM and 50m backstroke.

Other swimmers with top-three results included Marcus Hogan placing first in the Div. 2 boys 50m breaststroke, Lola MacDonald finishing second in the Div. 1 girls 50m backstroke, and Kenzie Pask finishing second in the Div. 6 girls 100m backstroke.
