Brentwood College boys lock up provincial basketball berth

After finishing second as hosts of the 2A Island boys basketball championships last weekend and surviving a challenge game on Tuesday night, Brentwood College is making a fifth straight trip to the provincial championships.

Brentwood earned the silver medal at the Island championships, which wrapped up last Saturday, then fended off a challenge for the provincial berth from third-place St. Andrew’s with an 83-51 victory on Tuesday to return to the provincial tournament.

“Any time you’re in a game like that that’s do or die, you’re a little nervous,” Brentwood head coach Blake Gage said. “It felt like we were favoured to win, but you never know how it’s going to go.”

Twelve different players scored, led by Liam Floyd’s 12 points, as Brentwood beat Kwalikum 104-41 in the first round of the Island tournament. Jagre Knight and Niko Bossi added 15 apiece. Dylan Gage put up 23 and Santiago Erding Fitznar added 11 in Brentwood’s 72-29 win over Pacific Christian in the second round. The final saw Brentwood fall to Lambrick Park 69-64, despite 22 points from Milan Pasquale and 15 from Dylan Gage.

Pasquale and Gage were named first-team all-stars, and Nathan Onasanya was selected to the second team.

Provincials begin next Wednesday in Langley. Brentwood finished third in its last trip to the tournament in 2020, and coach Gage isn’t sure where he expects this team to place.

“The big thing is you just want to play well,” he said. “You can’t go in and worry about things you can’t control. Winning the first game is huge. We won’t take it one game at a time so much as one play at a time. If you pay attention to that, good things can happen.”

Shawnigan Lake School also competed at the 2A tournament, where they tied for fifth place.

Shawnigan started out with a 58-46 loss to Pacific Christian, with Jack McDonnell scoring exactly half of the team’s points. They defeated Kwalikum 76-66 in the second round behind 20 points from McDonnell and 18 from Jeremy Harvey. Finally, they ended the tourney with a 67-57 loss to St. Andrew’s, despite a heroic 36-point effort from McDonnell, who was named a second-team all-star.

The Chargers opened with a 70-60 win over Campbell River Christian behind 19 points from Parker Terpstra and 17 from Cohen Floucault. They followed that with a 94-46 loss to Nanaimo Christian, with Jayden Croswell putting up 11 points and Ethan Mitchell scoring 10.

Croswell scored 18 and Terpstra added 13 in a 49-46 win over Ucluelet that put the Chargers into the third-place game, where they were defeated 77-61 by Brookes Westshore despite 33 points from Croswell.

Croswell was named a first-team all-star, and Terpstra was picked for the second team.
