Two teams from the host school gave them a run, but in the end, Brentwood College School took gold at the Central Vancouver Island Junior Girls B Volleyball Championship at Duncan Christian School last week.
Brentwood topped DCS 1 in the final, 17-25, 25-18, 15-10. Both of the finalists lost only one match over the course of the tournament: Brentwood fell to DCS 2 in pool play, and DCS 1’s lone defeat took place in the final against Brentwood.
Brentwood’s loss to DCS 2 — a team made up entirely of Grade 8s — led to a three-way tie in Pool A, with Brentwood, DCS 2 and Lake Cowichan all finishing with two wins and one loss, while Quamichan 2 played to three losses. Despite having defeated the eventual gold-medallists, DCS 2 was eliminated from the playoffs due to the tie-breaking procedure of set wins to losses.
DCS 1 finished atop Pool B with a 4-0 record, followed by Gulf Islands Secondary (3-1), Chemainus Secondary (2-2), Quamichan 1 (1-3) and Queen Margaret’s School (0-4).
While Brentwood and DCS 1 squared off for gold, Gulf Islands beat Lake Cowichan School 25-11, 25-15 in the bronze-medal match.
Brentwood’s A team previously won the Central Island junior girls A title on Nov. 5 and went on to place sixth at the Island championships a week later.
