Bulldogs come up short on the road against Victoria Spartans

Both Cowichan Bulldogs football teams that were in action last Sunday came up short against their Victoria Spartans opponents.

The junior bantam Bulldogs matched the Spartans closely all game, but just a few big plays ended up making the difference as the Cowichan team lost. The Bulldogs had two passes intercepted for touchdowns, and a short kickoff was recovered by the Spartans and run in.

Outside of those three plays, each team scored two offensive touchdowns as the Cowichan defence continued to improve.

“We are a very young team that has amazing potential,” co-coach PJ Shea said. “Right now, it’s consistency that hurting us. We’re committed to improving, and that’s just what we are going to do.”

The peewee Bulldogs missed two of their three scheduled practices in the week leading up to their game against the Spartans, and were outmatched by the Victoria players in physical terms. After consulting with his assistants at halftime, Cowichan head coach Opie Williams opted to end the game early for the safety of his players.

“Because of the difference in size and mental lapses by our players, Victoria had a strong game against us,” coach Opie Williams said. “There were also some questionable no-calls from the officials. We decided that the safety of the kids was more important. After an illegal tourist hit that was called by the officials, I called the game in the third quarter. I did send email for clarification on the three rules that I did not think where called correctly and will send in film of the questionable no-calls.”

Both the junior bantam and peewee Bulldogs have byes this weekend, but the peewees will be in action anyway as they play Prince George in BC Place at halftime of the Lions game against Edmonton.

“We will get pregame field passes and will be down on the field as the teams are warming up,” Williams said. “It is going to be a forever moment for these kids to have such an experience.”

The bantam Cowichan Bulldogs will see their first action in three weeks this Sunday, and play their first home game since Sept. 11, when they host the Westside Warriors at McAdam Park at 2:30 p.m.
