The Cowichan Valley Capitals swapped out goaltenders last month to solidify their goaltending tandem for the 2019-20 B.C. Hockey League season.
The Caps announced the addition of Zach Borgiel on June 20, then six days later reported that Jack Grant had been traded back to the Maritimes.
The 6-foot-2 Borgiel was stellar last season for the Leamington Flyers of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, posting a 20-7-1 record with a 2.25 goals-against average and .924 save percentage over 28 games. The 19-year-old native of Fort Gratiot, Michigan, was honoured with the Roy Caley Award for the league’s best GAA, and was also named Western Conference Goaltender of the Year, a Western Conference All-Star, and the Flyers’ MVP.
Earlier in June the Caps added Ben Howard, who played last season for the Calgary Mustangs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Howard became a free agent this summer when the Mustangs decided to take the 2019-20 season off.
Grant, who played 31 games for the Caps last season with an 8-22-0 record, one shutout, a 3.55 GAA and .893 save percentage, was traded to the Fredericton Red Wings of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. The Red Wings were formerly the St. Stephen County Aces, for whom Grant played before joining the Caps last offseason.
