After suffering their first loss of the season a week earlier, the Cowichan 49ers took out their frustration on Lakehill in a 9-0 win at the Sherman Road turf on Saturday evening.

Head coach Kevin James returned to run the show after handing the reins to manager Neall (Rocket) Rowlings in the previous match, and helped the masters soccer club get back on track.

Darcy Penner led Cowichan with three goals, while Rowlings, Adam Taft, George (Hagi) Thomas, Ryan (Fish) Fusick, Jordan Clarke and Sandro Tassone had one each. Goalkeeper Chris Mueller got his first shutout of the season.

“It was good for Sandro and Jordan, the newcomers to the team, to notch a goal each; they are fitting in nicely,” Rowlings commented. “Chris is an amazing keeper; he just has had some bad luck this season.”

Now with eight wins, one draw and one defeat, Cowichan sits second in the masters A division behind their “mortal enemies” UVic Alumni. The Niners visit Gorge this Saturday for the first of three straight road games.

The Cowichan Steelheads also won last weekend, beating Vic West 3-0 on Sunday. Kevin Smith scored twice in the first half, and Dennis Atkins added one late in the second.

With six wins and four losses on the season, the Steelheads will host Castaways Juniors at the Sherman Road turf this Saturday at 8 p.m.
