The league-leading and thus-far undefeated Cowichan 49ers were in action against league cellar-dwellers, Juan De Fuca, on Oct. 22. at the Sherman Road turf.

It looked like it would be a long night for the visitors when team scoring leader Neall Rowlings scored just two minutes into the game. Juan de Fuca made a game of it but consistent pressure from the 49ers led to two more tallies before the half when Stu Barker and Dave Tuckey each converted.

The second half saw Cowichan score twice more.

A strong cross from Darcy Penner found the foot of Brad Archibald only to have the ball hit the post and bounce to Barker who finished his second.

Team captain Tyler Hughes scored a beautiful chip to settle it at 5-0.

Many players had a strong game. Brett Hartmann and Mike Minkler each played well but all eyes were on Man of the Match, Darian Achurch as he continued his strong effort in goal, recording his fifth shutout in six games.

“Darian is so consistent, and the team has so much confidence in him,” said Rowlings.

The 49ers are on the road next week visiting Vic West, last year’s Tony Grover Cup finalist.

“They are a great team and every game against them has been close,” Rowlings noted.

Also on Oct. 22, the Cowichan Steelheads played an afternoon match against the Prospect Lake Lakers in Saanich. Despite a valiant effort and a goal from Roger Charlie, The Steelheads fell 3-1 to the Lakers. Their next contest is slated for Oct. 29 on the road against Gorge FC.
