The Masters A Cowichan 49ers started Tony Grover Cup play last Saturday with a 2-1 win over CB Bobcats.

George Thomas and Darcy Kulai scored goals for the 49ers, who will host the Lakehill Masters B team in the second round.

The 49ers, who sit second in the Vancouver Island Soccer League Masters A division, tied SFFC Old School 0-0 in a league game at Sherman Road on Tuesday.

The Masters B Cowichan Steelheads lasted just one game in the Tony Grover Cup competition, losing their opener against Vic West 3-0.

In Div. 2 of the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association, the Cowichan Outlaws lost 5-0 to second-place Saanich Fusion.

“They deserved to win for sure,” Outlaws coach Neall Rowlings said. “But the fact that we have not trained in the Cowichan Valley for over a month is very apparent among all of our teams.”

The Outlaws will start play in the Stephanie Shergold Cup tournament this Sunday at noon at the Sherman Road turf Field against Prospect Lake. The Cowichan Cougars also start the Shergold Cup tournament on Sunday at 10 a.m. against Gorge.
