Twenty-four teams competed in four divisions at the 15th annual Cowichan Eagles Youth Soccer Tournament held at the Sherman Road soccer fields over the Mother’s Day Weekend.

Cowichan teams medalled in each of the three divisions, with the best result coming in the 5 & Under division, where the Eagles tied We Wai Kai of Campbell River for first place, with another Campbell River team, Crazy Cleats, finishing third.

The biggest division was the 10 & Under group, with 12 teams. The Little Shooters from Victoria finished first, just ahead of the Eagles team coached by Peter Moses, with Alert Bay’s Tlowitsis Warriors in third. The field also included another Eagles team coached by Gina Modeste, as well as two teams each from Saanich, Victoria and Campbell River, and one each from Penelakut, Saanich and Nanaimo.

The 12 & Under division was won by the T.I. Braves from Turner Island over Wsanec Celosen from Saanich, with the Eagles in third. Also in the division were the Stz’uminus Raiders from Chemainus and teams from Victoria and Saanich.

We Wai Kai from Campbell River won the 14 & Under division over the Eagles, with the T-Birds from Victoria in third.

The Mother’s Day Tournament is one of seven on the Cowichan Eagles schedule this year. The club has already sent youth teams to tournaments in Victoria and Vancouver, with upcoming events in Campbell River, Alert Bay, and Victoria and Vancouver again. Sponsors who have helped out the club this season include Duncan Paving, LMG Insurance, Mr. Mikes, Columbia Ice, Matt Thomas Excavating, and Mad Man McKays.

The Eagles are hoping to add more sponsors for next year’s Mother’s Day Tournament in order to offer an award to each of the more than 350 players who take part. Anyone interested in helping out should contact president Peter Moses at cescpresident@gmail.com
